This CSMA/CD issue is a complete red herring (that's UK speak for a false lead....something which is actually irrelevant although on the surface appears an issue)

All (or most) fast ethernet and gigabit ethernet vendors today offer the option of 'full duplex' on their products. This means that the transmit and receive data flows are actually transmitted down different fibre/twisted pairs and thus collisions NEVER occur (you also get twice the thru-put - 100Mbps or 1000Mbps in each direction). No collisions means no need for CSMA/CD and also the diameter of these high speed networks is also increased (I won't go into why...but trust me its true)

I am half way thru reading all the 34 postings on this whole subject to date. I am amused by the fibre channel challenge. Does Steve Scribe work for a fibre channel company, perhaps Ancor - a company which nearly went bust a few months ago as I recall from some press releases I saw.

ATM vs Gig is a fair question. Fibre channel.....yes it is part of the GE standard which is still awaiting full ratification....but fibre channel on its own WILL NOT MAKE IT.
