ALL, I think good news about yield problem.

I received indirect confirmation from AMD investor relations that the cause of the speed bin yield problem was a MASK CHANGE, as I had suspected. She confirmed that results of a new mask change to correct the problem would be available in November. She also confirmed that the overall yield (% of good devices) is already improving but did not quantify this.

The other possibility for the speed bin problem, a change in process parameters, would be far more difficult to analyze than a mask change. Mask changes can be simulated to death; it should be possible to at least rank order a set of 3 masks as to their relative speed. For example, assume
mask A is the mask in use when Jerry said that "most" of the devices were running at 233 MHz (circa July 1-8)
mask B is the mask that caused the speed bin problem, probably introduced to correct minor defects,
mask C is the new mask whose output will appear in November.

I don't think AMD would release mask C until its speed under simulation was superior to mask A AND mask B. Therefore I have fairly high confidence that the speed bin problem will improve markedly when these chips start rolling off the assembly line.
