90...Hill-Rom cutting 90 North Charleston jobs

Hill-Rom Holdings Inc., a maker of hospital beds and other medical equipment, plans to shift some of its manufacturing from North Charleston to its Indiana headquarters, eliminating 90 local jobs.

The move announced Wednesday is part of a broader plan by the company to lower its costs and reduce its U.S. payroll by about 300 positions amid softening demand for its products from hospitals and other health care providers.

The jobs being targeted in North Charleston are about 25 percent of Hill-Rom's local staff of 350.

The area of the plant affected by the cuts makes components for highly specialized therapeutic hospital beds, said Lauren Green-Caldwell, director of corporate communications and public relations.

That work will be shifted to Batesville, Ind., where Hill-Rom is based and where the bulk of the beds are assembled, she said. Some tasks will be handled by outside suppliers, the company said.

"We're looking at gaining some efficiencies in how our manufacturing is accomplished," Green-Caldwell said.
