160...Snohomish County Budget Shortfall Cuts 160 Jobs

Tuesday, November 25, 2008
EVERETT, Wash. -- In a four to one decision, the Snohomish County Council approved Monday a 2009 budget that calls for the elimination of 160 jobs.

Nearly half of those jobs are vacant. The 80 employed workers will be laid off.

"We're going to lose about half our staff in planning and development services," said county employee Holly Faller.

That department is the one hardest hit by the $21 million shortfall in next year's county budget.

Faller said that a year ago, so many people were getting permits that the department could hardly keep up.

"Our lobby was full. We had two-hour waits. It was just hustle and bustle. The economy was going great. We had a lot of builders in here. Now it's gone to practically no one in the lobby," said Faller.

Faller, who has worked for the county for 17 years, is one of the employees who will lose her job.

"I was given a reduction of force notice. I am a supervisor here, and it's very heartbreaking," said Faller.

Snohomish County Council Chairman Dave Sommers said there may be even more job cuts then the 160.
