78...Clothing retailer Sierra Trading Post is laying off about 10 percent of its 830-person work force.

The layoffs will affect about 66 people in Cheyenne along with 12 employees in Cody and seven in Boise, Idaho, the Cheyenne-based company announced in a news release.

They're the company's first layoffs in 23 years in business.

"We are in the midst of the worst retail climate in generations," President Keith Richardson said in the release. "Retail sales in the fourth quarter of 2008 plummeted and deep discounting in all sectors failed to induce the consumer to buy."

Company officials declined to comment Wednesday.

Richardson's statement was in line with a Commerce Department report Wednesday that said retail sales in December were down 2.7 percent, more than double the expected amount.
