You merely found a liberal who took issue with one claim of Brooks about the cross-cultural relationship between happiness and religiosity. Even if the critic's argument were thought to be valid it wouldn't make Brooks non-credible nor nullify his observations about the relationship between happiness and religiosity in the US. And btw, I note that your own source has said so explicitly. Further there's nothing "self-righteous" or "pompous" about noting an objective correlation between two things. To say one is happy is not to claim one is righteous or arrogant. Its just the reporting of a fact.
