husband looked like a dim wit. I didn't get that at all. The interviews I saw of him suggested to me he was well above average intellect, he had run businesses and had numerous business interests, and in general, I don't know what you found to fault him on. In my experience it is a mistake to assume that someone is an idiot just because they lack formal education, and I know many PhDs who are idiots. Education is no substitute for intellect. We have many well-educated persons posting on this thread. Far fewer present here with intellect. And the union of the two subsets is small, indeed.
