I would hope that there is a way to empower these muslims to keep the more radical elements in check There is the problem in a nutshell. This is a religious war whether we want to admit it or not. There are only 2 ways for us to win this religious war, wipe Islam from the planet or the peaceful Muslims have to take over their religion. I've not seen evidence to date that there are enough peaceful Muslims to over ride the nuts. They are either a minority or too afraid to act. That needs to change IMO for this to ever be resolved. I know that sounds militant as hell but it really is the truth as I see it. I of course could be wrong but I tend to react badly to folks who think it's fun to launch missiles at civilians in Israel or who dance in the street in glee when maniacs fly planes into our buildings. It's very difficult to negotiate with someone who thinks dying is his path to virgins. MAD worked with the Russian's because for all their bluster they really aren't in a big rush to meet their makers. I'm not so sure of these loons running the middle east.
