The Geithner problem

The rollout of Tim Geithner's tax issues went extremely well: Obama's team was well-prepared, and the Senate committee had been appropriately briefed.

Still, Day Two seems to be producing a more skeptical reaction, everywhere from the Times to one Obama-supporting correspondent of mine, a lawyer who works for the federal government.

He emails:

I recently had a case where a guy was sentenced to a year's worth of prison for not paying taxes on income. Prison. I mean, the guy will be rotting in jail. As a public servant, it is very, very difficult for me to justify this when the next in line to head the Treasury did not pay his own taxes.
I'm disappointed that Obama doesn't see the hypocrisy in all of this. I got to tell you, it doesn't make me feel good about being part of the process that sends these folks to jail.
