RE: Angst over multiple versions of MMX2.

Some have expressed fear that multiple versions of MMX2 (floating point multimedia instruction set extensions) from AMD, IDT, NSM and finally, from Intel -- will be counterproductive. While I agree its in IDT, AMD and NSM's best interest to come out with ONE instruction set enhancement (so Microsoft will support it before Intel announces their version), maybe there's a way out.

One possibility is that AMD, Cyrix, IDT processors will use a writeable control store so that the definitions of the MMX instructions can be redefined in microcode. This would be a clever way to "beat Intel to market" yet retain future compatibility if needed.
