DJ UPDATE:ILZSG: World Lead Mkt In 8,000-Ton Surplus Jan-Nov 08 (Adds details on global refined lead production and consumption, and global lead mine output) LONDON (Dow Jones)--The world market for refined lead was in an 8,000 metric ton surplus in January to November 2008, the International Lead and Zinc Study Group said Wednesday. That compares with a 72,000-ton deficit in the same period in 2007, ILZSG said. Global production at 7.956 million tons was greater than consumption at 7.948 million tons. Australia, Canada, China, India, South Korea and the U.K. all increased their output, helping to lift global output by 7.6% on the year. Global consumption was 6.4% higher compared to 2007. Greater usage in the U.S. and China outweighed declines in Europe, Japan and parts of Southeast Asia. Global production for November totaled 741,100 tons, up from 725,100 tons in October. Consumption fell to 733,700 tons, up from 718,600 tons a month earlier. Global lead mine production for the January to November period increased by 7.4% to 10.663 million tons, although output has declined in recent months. Output in the January-November period rose in Bolivia, China, Peru, Russia and Sweden. China turned into a net importer in 2008, importing 3,000 tons for the January-November period. It exported 202,000 tons in the same period in 2007. -By Matthew Walls, Dow Jones Newswires; +44 (0)20 7842 9412; matthew.walls@dowjones.com (END) Dow Jones Newswires 01-14-09 1037ET |
