There is some controversy about whether ATM being very successful in the LAN. Several authors have pronounced it dead. I think it is very important to see the actual GE products before you can unequivocally say they will dominate the LAN. Many GE advocates for example, are saying that purchasers will discover that they will not just "drop in" without significant recabling. The CSMA/CD issue may be dead now, but it was very real this spring when it was discussed by a LLNL expert in high speed networking (I can provide you with the reference. I won't speak for Steve Scribe, but I invest in a number of companies that specialize in high speed network components (FC, GE, ATM, WDM). I am here to learn as much as I can and make money at the same time. Check out the NDTL site that Vincent posted if you want to see some real data on switch comparisons.
