Clarinets have a section between the mouthpiece and the upper register section called the barrel. This can be had in length gradations, and it's the barrel length that tunes the instrument. I own two clarinets, and the second (a Buffet model RC; H has a model R13, both real wood)is running a few cycles above the first. If I don't fuly seat the mouthpiece or barrel, I can "cheat" and get the two millimeters (about 3/32 inch, the thickness of a saltine)I need to put them in tune. If I don't do that, it's like having a burr in my panties. Puts a slow leak in the day's humor reserve.

H has ben practicing more regularly than her 'rent, so she handily blows me away these days. It warms this old campaigners heart, oh yes it does.

cheers js
