Adding cameras to police car dashboards is not a new idea, but what about for police motorcycles? In order to do that, you would need a more durable video system. Kansas based Digital Ally, Inc., thinks they have the solution - or at least a newer and improved solution than what is already on the market today.
Digital Ally develops, manufactures, and markets advanced video surveillance products for law enforcement, homeland security, and commercial security applications. One of its newer products for 2009 is the DVM-500M Digital Video System designed for police motorcycles and other mobile applications in the law enforcement and public safety markets.
An estimated 14% of police departments in the U.S., employing 60% of all officers, utilize motorcycles. Up to this point, mounting a video system on the motorcycles has not been that common. Digital Ally executives are hoping to change that. In a public statement, Digital Ally CEO Stanton Ross said, "The DVM-500M will allow police officers that ride motorcycles to have digital video capabilities similar to those provided by our DVM-500 In-Car Video System that is currently being used by law enforcement agencies in all 50 states and 17 foreign countries. The DVM-500M is specifically designed for the harsh weather and environmental conditions encountered by police motorcycle officers.”
The DVM-500M was specifically designed to work with BMW and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. BMW is said to be the largest seller of motorcycles for authority use worldwide, with more than 80,000 BMW motorcycles in official use in over 150 countries. Meanwhile, motorcycle patrol officers in more than 3,000 police departments in the U.S. ride Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The DVM-500M is of course waterproof and was also designed for installation on boats and other watercraft operated by law enforcement.
The DVM-500M is small, compact, and durable with weatherproof monitors and controls. It also has an integrated GPS with mark features and a wireless microphone. The product was initially introduced in October of 2008 at the 115th Annual International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference and Exposition. The DVM-500M will be available to the market in February of 2009. "We have received orders for immediate shipment, including a $650,000 order for DVM-500 systems from the Jackson, Mississippi Police Department, and a DVM-500 reorder from an international customer totaling more than $500,000," Ross said.
Another product from Digital Ally that will also be available in 2009 is a new video and audio system that can operate when a vehicle is not occupied, be triggered to record from secret switches and sensors, and be automatically activated when there is an acceleration in vehicle speed. |
