"On the other hand, they are a business, and as such they depend on participation here on their site. When people click away from this site, SI is no longer making money."

Censoring links is sufficiently heavy-handed that it tends to discourage people from coming in the first place. And it reduces the value of paid subscriptions, thus reducing the likelihood that people will subscribe. That is detrimental to a direct revenue source.

"So allowing links which encourage others to click away would be like someone handing out invitations for Burger King while on McDonald's property."

Disallowing links is more akin to McDonald's prohibiting people from TALKING ABOUT Burger King while on McDonald's property, something that would drive customers away FAST!

People know how to find other Web sites, so trying to prevent people from going there is futile and silly. People will go where they WANT to go.

"SI is private property, and as such we are all guests here and subject to their rules."

Of course it is private property. The issue is whether their policies represent good business sense. "Guests" are free to vote with their feet, so they are only subject to SI's rules to the extent they are willing to come here and remain here.

A better policy would be to set up the Web site such that a link opens a new window, leaving the original window open. That would mitigate the supposed down side of facilitating clicking away from the site, without alienating users.
