Carbon Energy is talking up the results of their on going UCG trial. Their new twist on this process is injecting oxygen and steam - not just air as was done in previous UCG trials and production. Oxygen and steam injection apparently produces more hydrogen and makes better feedstock for chemical production.

They also do something called 'controlled retraction point injection'. The air injector and gas outlet wells are drilled horizontally along the coal seam.

Kind of annoying that they post their press release as some kind of scanned PDF. Can't extract the text to post here, and it loads painfully slowly.

The next UCG trial in Queensland (Australia) will be Cougar Energy - some time this summer. Cougar's plan is to generate electricity with the syngas, so their trial involves some fancy gas cleaning equipment to prove that the produced gas is suitable for power generation. Cougar thinks the business plans of other companies (Linc, Carbon Energy) are much riskier, as they want to make diesel, chemicals and fertilizer out of the syngas.
