There are many formulas for laundry detergent on the 'net.

Basically 1 part Borax (20 mule team), 1 part washing soda (sodium carbonate)
(arm and hammer sells 'em or local chemical company even e-bay)

and a shaved bar of pure soap like Ivory, the original sunlight soap from lever or Fels Naptha is all you need.

5 gallons is a snap.

BTW, dishwasher detergent is basically just Washing soda and some scent. Check the net for recipes.
