If you are buying large volumes of shares, the difference in commission could be significant since I believe the deep discounters are, for example $9 a trade no amtter how many shares. So if you buy 5000 shares of stock X at $10 you commission would still be $9. I pay $40 for a trade with Schwab as a Schwab 500 frequent trader on the first 1000 shares and .04 per share above that so 5000 shares would cost me $200. However, if I am able to purchase stock X for 9 7/8 and you paid $10 (which is my point), I paid $625 less for the stock than you did. Even if I get the stock for 1/16 less than you, I still saved $312. The deep discount brokers ARE NOT making money at $9 per trade. You can be sure that they are making additional profi and it is buried in your trade price.
