Not really a con job. Humans naturally make and believe myths, they have since the beginning of civilization.

The historocity of Jesus is an open question. Most scholars do think he was a historical figure, but not all.

But what about the miracles? Was he born to a virgin? I'm a Jeffersonian when it comes to such things:

And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter

What about Moses? Was he real? Did the Exodus happen? It's becoming much more acceptable to treat Moses and the Exodus as myth. Can Jesus and his miracles be that far behind?

I don't think so.
