If it were just a name thing why would he pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to hide it?

Money was no object to him in this campaign, so if he wanted to hide it for whatever reason, he would pay to hide it. When a political embarrassment appears, there's no telling ahead of time whether it will blow over in a day or blow up into something big. So better to hide it if you can.
