The General Motors Powertrain-Tonawanda Engine plant plans to lay off 30 percent of its workforce

In an announcement Tuesday, the company blamed the layoffs on economic conditions that reduced consumer demand for GM products.

The layoffs apply to non-salaried workers. The company has not said what the impact will be on salaried employees.

Employment at the plant totaled about 1,600 last year, making GM the region’s 30th largest employer.
