I'm with you on the restaurants and motels etc, but if you've ever owned rental property and met some folks on public assistance you might be in for a surprise like I was. It just never crossed my mind that a family of six with animals would want to rent my little 1200 sq ft two bedroom house. A rental property manager told me to raise the rent to $650 immediately so they would not qualify under the State plan which would force me to rent to them if they applied as they got $600 from the State - so no finacial background denial possible.

PS: They were white, but if they'd had been black I would have had the same reaction, but the charge would have been racism.
