The town of Hennessey, Oklahoma bears the same name as my last name. Naturally, I had to visit when I was in the area. The town got that name because a guy named Hennessey was pulling a mule team through the area when Indians attacked him, tied him to a wagon wheel and burned him. I figure he's probably related, pulling a wagon through Indian territory is something a relative of mine would do.

The library in town had a lot of material on freighter Hennessey and the incident which led to the naming of the town. An alternate theory is the band of brigands were not Indians, but white guys disguised as Indians. My first reaction was this must be a PC thing, but after reflecting on it, I suppose it's possible. The librarian told me they get a lot of visitors named Hennessey visiting the town, from all over the states and some from Ireland. It is kind of neat to see your name everywhere you look in town, including the water tower. :)
