Either that, or stop using our military and force the oil companies to secure their own oil supplies and fight their own wars. Then let's see just how viable the oil industry really is.

Are you willing to apply this standard to every commodity and product that traverses the oceans that our Navy secures?

We have had bases around this world since the end of World War II. Each of them, in one way or another, provide either a quick reaction force, or a deterrent that prevents aggression that might disrupt our economy. Look at Japan and Germany and all the products we purchase from them? Are you willing to place a "defense" tax on BMW's and Toyotas?

Oil is only ONE commodity that transits the trade routes guarded by US and it's various allies. There is a general common good that the US provides in coordination with its allies, such as against Somalian pirates, that benefits ALL nations, not just the US. That said, I would be happy to see us import 0% of our oil from the Mid-East, not 10%.

I've long believed our allies ride out military coattails far too often and they need to do more. Afghanistan is one example of this. They deploy troops but then prevent them from carrying out combat operations, despite the fact that it's a NATO authorized mission in response against a NATO member. Hopefully Obama will have the moxy to create some change in this policy.
