700...Budget ax to fall on 700 Md. government employees
Baltimore Business Journal - by Ryan Sharrow Staff

Gov. Martin O’Malley unveiled his budget proposal for fiscal 2010 Wednesday, a spending blueprint clouded by a $2 billion revenue shortfall that will result in the state laying off 700 government workers.

That was the word from O’Malley and General Assembly leaders in Annapolis, where the budget -- $14.4 billion in general fund spending and $3.2 billion in capital spending -- was outlined in an afternoon press conference. The job cuts are part of O’Malley’s plan to trim $1.2 billion in funding at state agencies.

In addition, O’Malley is banking on the state receiving $350 million from the proposed federal stimulus package. Maryland will also use $255 million from the state’s Rainy Day fund.

“These are not easy times, and here in Maryland we haven’t been immune to the national recession,” O’Malley said, adding that 43 states face a budget deficit.
