400...Kalitta Air to cut another 200 jobs by Helen Lounsbury | The Bay City Times Thursday January 22, 2009, 8:39 AM
OSCODA - The steep job cuts that haunted Kalitta Air in December will revisit the Oscoda employer in January with 200 more layoffs pledged next week, managers said Wednesday.
The layoffs, amounting to 400 in little more than a month, are reportedly the company's last.
Managers say their goal is to diminish Kalitta's Oscoda workforce to fewer than 300 people - down from a high of 800 last year.
"We're doing one more, final layoff next week," said Don Nolan, general manager for Kalitta Air in Oscoda. "The company assures me that even as bad as things are looking, we can survive with a base of 250-300 people."
That's comfort for the remnant workforce, but little solace for the 400 people who've lost or will lose their jobs next week. One newly pink-slipped worker, for example, said he moved his family from Flint to Tawas to work for Kalitta just 10 months ago.
At the time, the company was hiring faster than any employer in the region. mlive.com |
