600...Bethlehem cement company facing layoffs
FLSmidth of Denmark to cut 600 jobs at 3 locations.

By Tracy Jordan | Of The Morning Call
January 22, 2009

A Bethlehem company with more than 1,000 employees is facing layoffs because of the global economic downturn in the cement and mineral industries.

FLSmidth of Bethlehem is one of three facilities in the FLSmidth Group of Denmark facing a total cut of 600 positions, according to a notice on FlSmidth's Web site Monday.

The notice does not indicate how many jobs are expected to be cut in Bethlehem, and no one was immediately available at the Bethlehem office to comment.

The notice said although FlSmidth has back orders for the equipment it designs and builds for the cement and mineral industries, it has decided to cut jobs to be prepared for uncertainties in the market.
