I know what you mean. I think my parents were 3rd or 4th generation Americans. I don't remember ever meeting my grandparents on my mother side but I saw my grandmother on my fathers side a bunch of times....(she was kind of a shrew in my book).

My fathers side came from Prussia but with a name like Altman, translated = old man, I'm not sure how far his line could be traced..

My mothers side is English/Irish and she actually tried to trace her roots but didn't get very far....
