I am not a pacifist. Self defense does not come under my definition of cruel or even wrong. I think we can both see the difference between a killing that is done in the context of deadly combat vs torture. No contradiction IMO. Surrender or die is a much different mind set than ... toes, then fingers, then one eye, then your nuts, then watch what I do to your daughter, etc ...

Edit: a shot in the leg attempting to disarm someone or to stop them from being able to commit is commendable and carries a special consideration.
