As a representation of economic reality, yes, the Dow is not particularly good. It makes the avoirdupois system of weights and measures positively rational.

A bit like consumer price index is not a precise measure of what things cost.

I guess you have a point about large buildings in Shanghai and Hong Kong and how their tennis courts are worth more than Auckland and the people are like Gods compared with the hillbillies of Howick. I don't know what your point is. I guess it's just that yours is bigger than mine. As long as that makes you happy. Those people in China sure are geniuses - they can make milk from melamine and children's toys from lead while silly westerners use more expensive components. I guess they are going to rule the world any day now and everyone will want to buy food Made in China to get quality.

As you can see, if Citi, and the rest of the list go to zero and have little effect, replaced by things doing better, then it's quite possible to see that the Dow will reach 16,000 as measured in financial relativity theory yardsticks.
