Parker Hannifin Corp. is cutting 130 jobs at its New Haven plant, New Haven Mayor Terry McDonald said Thursday.

That will bring the workforce at the plant to between 450 and 500, McDonald said.

The plant employed 820 in late 2007, and more than 900 at the end of 2006.

Officials at the New Haven plant, where Parker Hannifin’s climate systems division has its headquarters, could not be reached Thursday evening. Officials at corporate headquarters in Cleveland also were unavailable.

The job losses come in a region that is being battered by the recession. On Wednesday, hydraulic-parts maker Eaton Corp. announced that it is cutting 155 jobs, all but one at its plant in Van Wert, Ohio. The other job was cut at a smaller plant in Columbia City.

Parker Hannifin’s New Haven plant makes components and parts for the retail air-conditioning business.

In December, Parker Hannifin cut 67 jobs at a Nebraska plant that makes industrial rubber hoses. It blamed the bad economy for decreased demand for its products.
