<An abnormally mild stretch through the fall of 2005 and the winter of 2006 led to the disappointing resupply three years ago. Because of that and the hype about global warming, the operator of the winter road constructed a secondary route to provide a backup in case of a premature failure of critical parts of the main road. With the lighter traffic loads expected this year, there will be no secondary route.

The weather is also a factor in that decision. Yellowknife is currently experiencing a mild snap that brought daytime highs near the freezing mark, but a return to colder temperatures is imminent. Further, December and the first two weeks of January, which is the key period for ice formation, were abnormally cold. In fact, the last time Yellowknife experienced colder temperatures, President Truman was ramping up the Cold War by authorizing development of the hydrogen bomb and global warming champion Al Gore was still in diapers.>
