I remember scrabbling around surveying and computer programming during the big mining downturn and after the tech blow out of the late 90's. A lot of 12 dollar an hour jobs. Survived but weakened considerably. Hard to believe people will do skilled work for that wage normally. Way too much competition in the industry. Architects I knew were starving because of the overcrowding of their trade. I made the same wage doing similar stuff in the late 70's and though it was none too rich.

We may be going gold mining soon. Perhaps you would consider a job stacking gold bricks and counting them. We have had a lot of interest in that kind of work.
