I have always wanted to send a bottle back at a restaurant. Most people who proclaim bottles bad are wrong. YOu partner's son was probably the exception.

Wine is a very sensitive living thing. If something is stored in the same space as the wine it will pick up the smell. Thus if the winery stored some pesticides in the same place as the vats or even the bottles the wine would have a slight odor of whatever it was.

It is likely that was what he picked up on. Sometimes proper storage will allow the off putting smell to dissipate over enough time.

My problem I have a hard time with is the caramelized smell that is one of the first signs of an over aged wine gone bad.

Enjoying fine wine is great fun. The aromas of so many different things can reveal themselves. Lafite has a unique pencil shavings smell. Sauturnes can develop the aroma of pineapples. Young fine Chardonnay can exhibit a new mown hay smell.
