I think some of it may have to do with vitamin D deprivation. Kids are inside so much now they probably aren't getting anywhere near enough vitamin D. That's a vitamin that has systemic health consequences. Childhood diabetes may be caused somewhat by D deficiency, we know colds and illnesses are exacerbated by deficiency, and I'd bet so are allergies and asthma. Further, the weird frankfood crap many people feed their kids is challenging their systems still further. Not all those mutlisyllabic words in our kids' twinkies are actual food- and goodness knows what all those freaky chemicals do to our kids' health. (well not my kids, since they don't eat those- but I guarantee you a lot of other kids are eating them.)
