I have always though that smaller and less intrusive government, lighter taxes and balanced budgets would naturally have a very large political constituency --- it's just mostly inertia (and the machinations of our embedded political duopoly) that keeps marginalizing those who believe in those things.

Several surveys have been run which --- when the word 'Libertarian' is not used, but people are just asked about what their beliefs are --- seem to demonstrate that a good one quarter or more of the voting public believes in these things....
