85....Channel 13 Announces Major Layoffs

NEW YORK (AP) -- WNET.ORG, the company that operates two public television stations in New York City, announced Friday that it was cutting 85 jobs because of the economic downturn.

The layoffs started Thursday across all departments at channels Thirteen and WLIW21 and will be completed by Feb. 6. WNET.ORG currently employs about 500 people.

``While it is never easy to let go of dedicated individuals, we need to act responsibly in the face of an economy that remains weak and unpredictable,'' said Neal Shapiro, president and CEO of WNET.ORG.

Company spokeswoman Kellie Specter said the layoffs will not affect current programming, but any show in development would be reconsidered.

WNET.ORG is trying to slash 8 percent from its current operating budget of $186 million.

The company is also reeling after the governor's proposed budget included a 50 percent reduction for public television. WNET.ORG currently receives $8.7 million from the state.
