RE: What's Coming at Comdex?
Many people here have been speculating on what's coming at Comdex. On SyQuest's new home page, under Investor Relations, in the Investor Relations FAQ, they provide some hints:
syquest.com
"SyQuest will show a product featuring its highly anticipated Rocket technology during Fall COMDEX in Las Vegas, Nevada in November. This product will feature a 4.7-gigabyte capacity and will be the first removable cartridge hard drive to utilize magneto-resistive heads.
Research and development is currently underway for other new products."
To me, it sounds like they will be showcasing the re-introduced Rocket at Comdex, but are still just in early R&D with "SparQ" (if it even exists).
There are other indications on their site that they expect to release the Rocket soon:
syquest.com
"FUTURE TECHNOLOGY
Rocket Technology
Starting at 4.7 gigabytes per cartridge, the advanced Rocket technology surpasses existing barriers for removable storage in high-end applications such as workstations, servers, jukeboxes and audio-video editing. It is especially well-suited to MMX systems and DVD-mastering. Rocket technology features the first removable cartridge drive to utilize MR (magneto-resistive) heads. This technology is scheduled to be integrated into a soon-to-be announced SyQuest product by year-end."
Although they might be introducing "SparQ" at Comdex, I seriously doubt it. I have serious doubts that such a product exists. I also have serious doubts about whether or not such a product would even help SyQuest. They've failed miserably at competing with Iomega, even when they had a size, speed and/or price advantage. The last thing they need is another Jaz-killer. They need to find their own niche and go for it. Rocket might be that niche.
I think that SparQ is factored into the stock price (but oddly enough I don't think the Rocket is yet). If SparQ *ISN'T* intruduced at Comdex, watch for a big drop. If it is, watch for a small drop. (People buy on rumor and sell on news. SparQ at Comdex or the lack thereof will be news.)
That's just my opinion, though. Everyone's welcome to their own, and I think most people on this thread would disagree with my opinion. That's fine with me.
