Its very unlikely, but its very unlikely partially because of our military superiority. Even absent that superiority, or with confidence that the US wouldn't militarily intervene there are good reasons for China not to attack Taiwan or start other aggressive military adventures. For Taiwan a big part of the issue is Taiwan's only military combined with China's lack of amphibious capability, and also as you point out China's dependence on trade, but trade situations can change over time, and also countries can act foolishly against their own interest. Even if China is unlikely to attack Taiwan, having the capability to deal with the situation is important in case the unlikely happens (and also because the capability can be used in other situations, including ones that are totally unanticipated at this time).
