It was a bad idea at the time. It has been shone many times that companies usually perform poorly when they become massive. But there was so much money to be made in the mergers and the CEOs got to brag about the size of the resulting companies that they went through with them.

A lot of things have been done in the name of 'efficiencies' that may not of turned out to be so efficient. And it goes well beyond financials. Are we better off with Walgreens and CVS than we were with 10's of 1000's of corner pharmacies (owned by locals)? I'm not sure.
