150...Food distributor U.S. Foodservice, long one of Howard County’s major employers, will close its Columbia office, eliminating 150 local jobs.

U.S. Foodservice said Jan. 12 that it would cut one level of management, consolidating the jobs performed in Columbia into its Rosemont, Ill., headquarters and Phoenix processing center.

As customers and suppliers face the pressures of the recession, U.S. Foodservice must cut costs and fill orders faster, officials said in a statement. The job cuts will take effect in March, according to a layoff notice provided to the state.

U.S. Foodservice — which distributes food to restaurants, hospitals, schools and hotels — joins a wave of local employers paring staff or closing offices amid the recession. Last year, Zurich American Insurance Co., Celebration Foods and financial giant HSBC each cut hundreds of local jobs.
