Those small businesses are gone and there's no market for their services. Where do you come up with this stuff?

From the same place you come up with the notion that we're not better off with Walgreen's and CVS than with tens of thousands of locally-owned corner pharmacies.

I mean, Home Depot expands and that's seen as bad. Then Home Depot lays off people and that's seen as bad. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I am not sure we are worse off that the small mom and pop places have gone out of business. Truthfully, big companies can provide the same goods at cheaper prices. But what's lost is the vested interest in the community that mom and pop stores have. When business slows up, the big chain will close the store down but the mom and pop will try to stick it out. That's the downside and its hard to measure but it does have an impact.
