Private schools tend to get good results, but you have to consider that their students are the children of people who:

1. Have money; and
2. Are very interested in their kid's education

So they have a pretty big edge over the public schools. I don't think the religious stuff is a big factor, in my home town people with money send their kids to a Catholic school even if they're Protestants.
