If some county in the US, or across the border in Mexico, started rocketing US population centers, and sending suicide bombers to attack concentrations of civilians we would also attack. With police forces if it was in the US and a small enough problem, with the military if it was not.

Israel's no saint, but Israel tries to keep civilian casualties on both sides down, while Hamas tries to makes sure that many civilians get killed, both by targeting Israeli civilians, and by hiding behind Palestinian civilians. When one side is issuing warnings to civilians, and the other is making indescriminate attacks from schools and hospitals, its kindof hard to support the later.

If Israel acted with as little restraint as Hamas, it wouldn't risk its soldiers in an invasion it would treat Gaza City like the allies treated Dresden or Tokyo in WWII.
