Exactly so.
Clear cutting in a river valley is just as stupid as cutting from a cliff.

I recall an incident many years ago when I argued against logging in some bottom lands. I could see from my recon that the river was using the bottom lands to spread energy during flood stages by providing some place for the water to go while waiting its turn. If we had messed up the drainage or changed the flow patterns of the river in any way, the results down stream could have been disastrous.

I get disturbed when I see some of the best timber ground in the world being cut off from harvest. The net effect of that is to push harvest over to areas less productive, most recently to countries with no environmental restraint whatsoever.
