Lihir's PNG mine closed after unrest
January 27, 2009 - 11:19AM

news.theage.com.au

Lihir Gold Ltd, Australia's second biggest gold company, says a dispute with local landowner groups at its namesake mine in Papua New Guinea has resulted in a temporary halt to production.

The gold miner said it was working with the peak landowner association to resolve the dispute, which is not expected to have a material impact on group output for the year.

The Lihir mine is expected to produce about 700,000 ounces of gold in the 2008 calendar year.

The mine was hit with strike action in late 2007, which resulted in a cut to output, after employees took action in a bid to secure employment for local people ahead of foreign nationals.
