The discussion involved a litmus test or at least a selection bias - Gee, you went to BYU (or somehow other institution that demonstrated that you are on the straight and narrow road) QED you are good for the FBI or CIA.

I think it is fair to cite Hoover, Cohn, and yes, even Ridgway as counterpoints.

Social litmus tests are just lame and that was my point. Someone who can prioritize rules into a) really important, and b) not really important is critical in these agencies which don't have particularly good track records in doing this despite claims to the contrary.

Things that are not really important are minor infractions or indulgences which the person must be able to be open about. If the person feels they need to hide this because of recriminations from their organization, boss or church, it puts them into a morally ambiguous zone - a slippery slope if you will. People that accept their vices, feel comfortable in their skins and have a desire to improve the country should not be selected out of these positions for what are nothing more than minor indulgences.
