I agree timing is important but I wonder if CAP is as far ahead as we once believed. I've been told the gap has narrowed. As for Amati entering the CAP fold, wouldn't it take far too long to develop it and bring it to market in time to compete? I suspect if Amati thought it was worth the effort, they'd do it. I'm quite pleased with their focus on VDSL and foreign markets in addition to ADSL/DMT. Let me quote something from their prospectus (p. 54) I hadn't noticed earlier:

"Amati believes that its DMT technology is superior to other available modulation technologies for this application and is designing VDSL products using its microelectronics capability. As with ADSL, VDSL products will be asymmetric and carry video, voice and data simulataneously. ***Amati's Piccolo VDSL product is expected to operate symmetrically at speeds of up to 25 Mbps. Amati's VDSL products are expected to be introducted in 1997 and will be competing for the ANSI standard for VDSL transmission. . . [its] VDSL chip is being designed for utilization in cable as well as copper transmission**** . . . [and it] believes DMT has the unique capability of optimizing the upstream data rate relative to other technologies available."
