Qualcomm Vulnerable To Delayed Digital TV Switchover
Posted by Eric Savitz
If you’re trying to figure out the losers in the pending 4-month delay in the switchover to digital television signals, here’s a hint: the list start with Qualcomm (QCOM).

Last March, Qualcomm paid $558.1 million in the FCC auction of the 700 MHz spectrum which the analog TV broadcasts are about to vacate. Qualcomm plans to use the spectrum to increase the reach of its MediaFlo mobile television service. At the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Qualcomm CEO Len Lauer said in an interview with Tech Trader Daily that the company was planning an expansion of the service to markets which MediaFlo previously wasn’t reaching, including New England and the San Francisco Bay Area.

TheStreet.com today notes that Qualcomm had anticipated launching expanded coverage for the service next month, right after the switchover of broadcast TV to digital, and has already spent millions on equipment.

QCOM today is down 88 cents, or 2.4%, to $35.70.
