Hong Kong has been in this incredible bubble for a few years. I was there two years ago the average teenager had $600 a month US for allowance, "made in china" things cost 5X more in HK than here in silly valley (tho we get things TOO cheap in silly valley, is best to not ask questions how merchants do that) a basic apartment cost $750,000 and up, absurd. So in some ways I lack some sympathy.
Just looked in desk drawer I have $570 HK dollar left over from that trip and also yuans dated 1965 with pictures of men and women of the Mao red army on it. The Hong Kong dollar printed in English with the British seal versus the red China yuan Mao money printed in the five languages of China speaks volumes of the torment and culture clash that must be fought to resolve the dilemma. And the yuan will win.
China will break the back of Hong Kong and bring it to its knees. There is only one China, there will be only one China. We are watching the death of the British Empire.
